MY
CHILD IS "GIFTED": HOW CAN I HELP DEVELOP HER/HIS POTENTIAL?
Rely
on your intuition: If your child spoke, read, wrote, or did
math problems at an early age, encourage enrichment & acceleration
Find a circle of friends & families which is supportive of nurturing
giftedness
Contact your local parent-and-me, pre-school, school district,
or gifted association & ask about programs for the gifted
Your child may be developing her/his intellectual gifts unevenly:
after age 3, ask the school district to assess
your child for giftedness & to screen for any disabilities
which might adversely affect your child's educational performance
WHAT ARE MY CHILD'S
LEGAL RIGHTS?
Is your child
0 to 21?
Does your child have a disability that adversely affects her/
his ability to learn in a general education classroom?
Determine if your child is eligible
for gifted programs &/or special education through a nondiscriminatory
evaluation by your local school district
Your child may be
protected under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA),
§504 of the Rehabilitation Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act
(ADA), or the Tech Act. If your child is eligible for special education
under the IDEA, then s/he is legally entitled to a Free Appropriate Public
Education (FAPE), in the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE), developed
through an Individualized Education Program (IEP); you may have the right
to sue your local school district in court (due process), if an appropriate,
individualized education is not being provided to your child.
