Getting the Right Education for Your Child from the Start
  1. Use your intuition
  2. Ask your pediatrician
  3. Get on the “mommy tomtoms”: network in the park
  4. Call Connections for Children for day care referrals
  5. Read through Los Angeles Family, Wet Set Gazette, etc., for ideas
  6. Is the school within walking distance? Will “playdate” logistics be easy?
  7. Is the director open to frequent communications & observations?
  8. Do teachers have something nice to say about each child at the end of the day?
  9. How are conflicts resolved?
  10. How are children with special needs accommodated?
  11. Try a parent-and-me group or spend a day visiting to get a feel for the school: is it a good fit?
  12. Review educational philosophies for personal compatibility: Montessori, Waldorf, Reggio Emilia, etc.
  13. Keep an eye out for the next educational step:
  • By age 3, start looking at local public pre-K programs
  • By 4, look at local [LAUSD] magnet kindergartens
  • Remember that student:teacher ratios in CA public schools are 20:1 in K-3, rising to 32:1 in 4th grade, & 35:1 in 6 th
