Special Needs Advocate
As parents of children with special needs we face the awesome task of meeting the often-complicated physical, mental, emotional, and educational needs of our children.
I have searched and fought for services and placements for both of my special needs sons. I helped create the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) Schools for Advanced Studies (SAS) program, which impacts 50,000 gifted children. I now work as an educational advocate representing parents of special needs children to obtain services from their local school districts. With my multidisciplinary background in education, law, health statistics, sociology, and biology, as well as my activism in gifted and special needs education, I particularly enjoy working with parents of challenging children who have borderline diagnoses. In addition, I work with the highly gifted population, who may have emotional issues as well as learning disabilities. This population is especially challenging because it is particularly difficult to qualify them for services.
You are the expert on your special needs child. No one knows more about your special child than you. Your parental knowledge is extremely important to the educational process. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), recognizes your importance and expertise as a parent. The law encourages your participation as an equal member of the team that will decide the educational placement, support, and services your special needs child will receive. From my experience as a parent of children with special needs, from many years of working with educators, I have a fair amount of insight into the education process, and the advocacy tools that work.
