Mainstreaming Makes a Difference
A popular integration program for learning disabled could benefit children in Los Angeles.

By Sharon Schatz Rosenthal

Eight-year-old Tamar's fingers dance across a set of harp strings like small waves rhythmically pounding the surf. While the large instrument dwarfs her, she doesn't seem to mind as she sits and plays a complicated classical tune. TESTIMONIALS

It seems like a decade since that fateful day in August 2002, when we sat it your office and discussed our case with you, as our child was about to enter kindergarten…. While meeting with you we came to realize that, like most things in government, the local school district is a bureaucracy that can be worked to your advantage or fought to your disadvantage.

You taught us that we had to learn the system, so we could gain some advantage over the lawyers and bureaucrats who will spend tax dollars with abandon to resist giving your special needs child the services he or she requires and that are owed them by law. We became students of self-advocacy for our child, and you were our instructor. We are very grateful for your instruction.

Please tell all of your current and future clients alike that it is possible to secure [the things your child needs], but you have to know the system and work the rules, just like the administrators across the table from you…. Time and again I see and speak with parents that don’t get what their child needs because they don’t know how the system works. If they don’t have an advocate, I tell them to see you, and if they do, I tell them they are not getting their money’s worth, and to see you. As middle school starts to loom in our horizon, I’m sure we will be in need of your guidance again, and I know we’ll be in good hands.

Loren Grossman has been an extraordinary resource for us in planning the formal education of our highly gifted son. She's been at various times the voice of reason, a devil's advocate, a seer, a therapist and even a cheerleader. While we've found that there is no easy course when you are guiding an exceptional child through the often-maddening public (and private) school system, Loren has provided the wisdom and perspective that's made our journey -- from kindergarten all the way through middle school -- more manageable. We're grateful for everything Loren's done for us, and her phone number remains on our speed-dial.
